Lewisham is located on the south bank of the Thames. Recently archaeologists have discovered evidence of prehistoric activity, such as burial mounds, and primitive ritual activity.
The church owned much of Lewisham originally, Lewisham Cathedral being an obvious relic of a monastic London.
In 1599, the Globe Theatre was built on the Bankside. It was built by Shakespeare's playing company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men. It was destroyed by fire on the 29th of June, 1613. A modern replica simply known as the Globe has in recent years been built near the original site.
